Best Freshwater Aquarium Plants
- Downoi or “Little Star” (Pogostemon helferi) – It has star-like, crinkled leaves and are easy to keep. It usually needs bright light but will thrive in lower-light conditions. This is among the freshwater aquarium plants that can grow to about 4 inches and may need some iron supplementation.
- Dwarf Sag (Sagittaria subulata) – It is a fast growing and requires only medium light to thrive. It usually grows to about 3 inches long but it can get high as 6 inches. Once in awhile the stems grow to the surface and produce little white flowers.
- Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) – This kind of plant may be the “star” for beginner freshwater aquarium because it is exceptionally hard and also very thriving and does not easily die. It normally grows about 8 inches tall and has a medium to dark green leave with spikes. Just like other freshwater aquarium plants, it requires moderate light and does not need to grow on soil. It attaches its rhizomes to just about any rough surface like barks, rocks or driftwoods.
- Floating Watermoss (Salvina natans) – This fern prevents algae. It reproduces quickly and floats on top of the aquarium. But it is not a good choice for very advanced aquarium because it blocks bright light form coming into the aquarium. To help keep this plant healthy liquid fertilizer should be used.
- Water cover (Marsilea hirsuta) – The shape of this plant is like a four-leaf cover. It is easy to keep and does not require much maintenance. This is one of the freshwater aquarium plants growing for about 4 inches and it thrives best with bright light but it will also do fine in low to medium light.
